Ski information
Torino was the city that hosted the 2006 Winter Olympic Games. The city is surrounded by mountains, with a lot of snow, ski resorts and amazing slopes.
Here we provide some information for who may be interested to stay around a little bit longer and have some additional days of fun in the mountains.
Main sites for skiing are west of Torino (Bardonecchia and the Via Lattea) or north, in the Aosta Valley. We provide information only for the first sites because it is closer to Torino and it can be easily reached through public transportation.
Please ask to the school organizers if you want to have more information about ski resorts in the Aosta Valley (e.g. Cervinia, Courmayeur, and Monterosa Ski).
Via Lattea (milky way)
These are the slopes which hosted the 2006 Winter Olympic Games. It is an amazing place… kilometers and kilometers of amazing slopes!
We believe this is the best trade-off between quality and prices (basically because they sensibly improved the quality of lifts for the Olympic Games).
Skypasses are available for the entire ski area (more expensive) or only a portion of it (e.g. only Sestriere, only Sauce D’Oulx, only Claviere+Monginevro, and more).
Our suggestion goes to Claviere+Monginevro, but if you want to enjoy World Cup’s slopes you have to go to Sestriere.
Via Lattea has a lot of relaxing slopes and a great number of amazing difficult ones. We can mention Colletto Verde, a slope that you can find
at Claviere-Monginevro (take a look at the Via Lattea map): it is not a slope, it is a snow wall!
Unfortunately, getting there with public transportation may be a little cumbersome. Here there are some possibilites:
- bus from Torino to Pinerolo and Sestriere
- bus from Torino to Oux and Sestriere
- bus from Torino airport to Sestriere
- train from Torino to Oulx, then bus from Oulx to Sestriere
More info available at http://www.vialattea.it/ (sorry, only in Italian) or here http://www.ultimate-ski.com/Ski-Resorts/Italy/Vialattea/index.html.
Bardonecchia
Nice place… but not as famous as the Via Lattea.
The main advantage here is that you can easily reach the slopes directly by train from Torino, since it is on the main path that connects Italy to France.
More info available at http://www.bardonecchiaski.com/en_US/home.
For train info, please look at http://www.ferroviedellostato.it/homepage_en.html and select “Torino Porta Nuova” as leaving station and “Bardonecchia” as arriving point.
