Telematics Lab - Politecnico di Bari, Italy
The research group at Telematics Lab (DEE, Politecnico di Bari, Italy) is involved in the research on the most relevant technologies in the area of telecommunication networks. With reference to the topics relevant to the TMA Action, the group is working, in particular, on active measurements in 3G networks. It is well known that in the Internet, there are several security issues due to malicious users (e.g., worms, port scanners, DoS, and so on). This problems become critical when a wireless network, specifically a 3G network, is taken into account. In fact, these wireless networks are governed by a number of parameter settings that are known only to the network operator. Thus, we are working on the development of an innovative tool to infer actual value of network parameters (e.g., timeouts) without any cooperation with the network operator. Such an information can be fruitfully exploited by researchers to define realistic network scenarios (e.g., for their simulations). Moreover, it can be used to study and prevent malicious attacks against the Radio Access Network, e.g., a paging attack. In the development of the tool, we are using an active measurement approach sending packets to probe network and infer parameters.
